Sundar Pichai wants more regulations on AI, says it is dangerous

Would you believe it? Of all people, the CEO of the most sought after tech giant has been wary of the new buzzword – Artificial Intelligence. Yes, he has stressed on the need for more regulations in the face of the dangers of artificial intelligence.

In fact, he is not the only tech kingpin who has made those claims about the dangers of artificial intelligence but coming from someone as huge as his stature should make it clear that there are a few reasons to believe that artificial intelligence is dangerous if not used with the proper regulations. This has become truer with the burgeoning cases of facial recognition technology-related abuses and deepfakes.

Pichai made that statement in an op-ed published in the Financial Times. He states,

“There is no question in my mind that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated. It is too important not to,…The only question is how to approach it.”

In his writeup, the Google CEO clearly mentions that the AI has the potential to improve the lives, but also comes with the biggest risk of not being able to do it. He does not want the Artificial Intelligence to be under acute control but expects the regulations in such a manner that a cautious approach is adhered to. He advocates the new regulations in case of the technologies like self-driven cars, while expecting extension of the existing regulations to cover AI in case of other areas like healthcare and education.

The call by the executive of a firm, which perhaps is the prominent company in the realm of AI, comes at a time where both US and EU norms of the control on AI are completely divergent in nature. EU is looking for extensive control which includes a five-year ban of facial recognition. The US, on the other hand, is for the lighter control that will air the innovation but stop undeserved applications.
