Diabetes in Kids is rising – Want to be safe right in time?

Diabetes has been one of the deadly diseases and has been affecting more than the average population. According to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, around 30.3 million people, which accounts for 9.4 percent of the US population has Diabetes. This includes 193,000 children and adolescents younger than age 20 years. The annual number of children and adolescents diagnosed with Diabetes 2 has risen to 5300. That should be quite alarming enough, and perhaps a cause for concern to the parents. Maybe it is high time we need to check out what can be done to address Diabetes in kids on a large scale.

More cause for concern has been the rise of Type 1 Diabetes in child. Unlike Type 2 diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes cannot be cured either by means of medications or through a change in the lifestyle or diet. In fact, a sudden spike in Type 1 Diabetes in children has been what has taken the researchers by surprise, and they are completely at a loss to explain the reasons.

What is Type 1 Diabetes in Kids?

Well, for that matter, Type 1 Diabetes can hit anyone who has not been following a healthy regime in terms of lifestyle and diet. But, the rise of Type 1 Diabetes – also known as Autoimmune diabetes, has raised a clarion call for the experts.

Also referred to as juvenile diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes in children under the age of 20 has been causing huge concern.

If you have Type 1 Diabetes, you cannot produce insulin which is a hormone required for regulating the sugar levels in the blood. They will be reliant on insulin for life and cannot be cured. Type 2 Diabetes in children, however, can cure the disease with a change in their lifestyle and the right type of weight loss regime.

Signs of Diabetes in kids – A few tell-tale indicators

Do note that the signs of Type 1 Diabetes in children can show up suddenly without any apparent reason. Perhaps, the initial signs can prove to help create awareness and fight the menace of Diabetes in kids.

Some of the possible indicators can include

  • Extreme thirst without any apparent reason.
  • Frequent urination or urge for urination
  • Heavy or labored breathing
  • Drowsiness or lethargy
  • Increased appetite
  • Sugar in urine
  • Fruity odor on the breath
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Occasional bursts of unconsciousness

As long as the teachers, educationists, and more importantly, the parents are aware of the warning signs of the disease, and it can be taken care of. In essence, we can perhaps handle the cases where it may go undiagnosed and reach a stage beyond cure or attention.

Anything else e know about Type 1 Diabetes in kids?

Well, the researchers and experts themselves have been taken by surprise and find it rather hard to understand the reasons for the sudden spike in the Diabetes in child symptoms. However, the ongoing research in the field has come up with a few startling results and findings.

As we all are aware, Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Recent research has brought ahead a startling fact to the fore. Studies have found that Type 1 Diabetes in children can cause brain loss in kids, which can ultimately lead to memory loss and attention cognition abilities.

Like Dr. Fergus Cameron, head of diabetes services at Royal Children's Hospital in Victoria, Australia, and the lead author of the study put it rather blandly,

"Children and adolescents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes with diabetic ketoacidosis have evidence of brain gray matter shrinkage and white matter swelling,"
